The State's Attorney's Office recognizes that there is more to prosecution and community
safety than occurs in the confines of the courtroom. The attorneys and members of the
office are all active in the community as well. Attorneys, at the request of local groups,
speak at community meetings and functions such as the Optimist Club, the Rotary Club,
various churches and schools and the Calvert Pines Senior Center explaining our role and
function within the community. Attorneys speak on such subjects as Internet safety for
children, the sexual offender registry, domestic violence, teen dating violence, elder
financial abuse, and identity theft. In addition, the attorneys teach at the Southern
Maryland Criminal Justice Academy which is the facility that trains all police recruits
for Calvert, Charles and State Mary's Counties. The attorneys aid in the training
by providing instruction to new recruits in the area of Fourth Amendment/Search
and Seizure Law. The staff attorneys also provide in-service training for the more
experienced officers, keeping them up to date on the changes in the law. In addition, the
State's Attorney's Office participates in fundraising events for charity such as the Relay
For Life – putting a team together and raising money for the fight against Cancer – each
year since 2007.
